I am like most people who grew up with a passion for stories. After making my mother cry by writing a story on Santa-shaped paper when I was in second grade, I realized the power stories have to nurture and change people. After shifting away from a corporate career handling toxic tort and medical liability litigation, I was hired by a digital press to acquire and edit romance novels. I was quickly promoted to the managing editor role where I hired and trained staff and interns, worked on projects from acquisition to distribution, and edited hundreds of books across multiple genres.
Since then, I've enjoyed the triple threat I never knew my work life could be: editor, instructor, and writer. I've worked as a contract editor for various publishers and authors managing editors, freelance staff, and staff writers, developed production schedules, provided developmental editing and copyediting, developed style guides, and collaborated with marketing and IT leadership.
When I teach or coach, I bring a depth of publishing experience to the process and draw on my experiences writing as a staff writer, ghostwriter, and author. Writing to market, understanding pacing and structure, pursuing traditional publication or a self-published author brand and career are concepts that can feel confusing and isolating. Whether I am editing, coaching, or teaching, I provide actionable feedback and evidence-based guidance.
While I'm grateful for my corporate background (I'm a much more informed editor of all things medical, legal, and corporate!) I'm grateful to spend my days immersed in much more creative spaces. I bring skill developed over more than a decade of editorial team management, submissions analysis and acquisitions, cross-genre developmental editing and copyediting, and freelance practice management to help authors at every stage of the journey learn, grow, and succeed.
As a queer woman, I more than just value diversity. Diversity and inclusion are critical team-building and human-centered values that show up in everything from the style guides I create for publishers and editorial teams to the graphics I use on social media. Compassionate and human-centered, team-focused, and committed to growth and development, I try with every publisher, client, and student to live out the changes I'd like to see in the industry I love so much. When I'm not reading, I can be found exploring Los Angeles with my dog, playing Magic the Gathering with friends, rewatching my favorite streaming shows (like Vox Machina, Flavorful Origins, and The Walking Dead) or playing video games.
Supporting the literary side of publishing, I am presently the Managing Editor of Southland Alibi, the UCLA Extension literary journal. We've spent five years developing the vision, team and infrasctructure for a multi-genre space that welcomes underrepresented creators into literary publishing. I've helped develop contracts, branded social media, and even help build the site itself on the University's website. I'm excited to see our inaugural work in fiction, nonfiction, art, and poetry published in Summer 2023.
I love working with authors at every stage of their career to evaluate the market-readiness of work, to provide developmental edits and/or copyedits to contracted work, and to help authors make their writing dreams come true. But I also work extensively with publishers on a contract basis. I have managed freelance teams including other editors, ghostwriters, marketers, copy writers, and production staff, developed and implemented house style guides, set acquisitions goals and strategies, and managed workflow, workload, and scheduling of acquired projects.
Whether I guide a new romance author uncertain about structure through the pacing and beat of a work or help a historical fiction author develop a market-ready submission, I deliver personalized and custom attention to each work. Writing a memoir and need a coach to help you understand structure? Need an accountability partner to ensure you don't endlessly stare at that blank page? I offer single sessions or manage long-term projects based on each client's unique needs.
I don't feel like I would have a career without mentioning Musa Publishing. Who knew back so many years ago when I attended Skype meetings evenings and weekends that I was learning how to run a publishing company and making connections that would last a career? Where did I learn to evaluate submissions? Acquiring romance novels at Musa. Where did I start to assess cover art and marketing copy, learn the difference between an open compound word and a hyphenated compound adjective? You guessed it. After a short stint as the romance imprint Acquisitions Editor, I was promoted to Managing Editor and aquired and edited books, hired, trained, and managed of a large team of freelancers, interns, and authors. I developed policy, investigated innovations, and essentially grew ten more heads to wear every imaginable hat as the face of the company. Musa Publishing closed in 2015 after the ownership board lost the founding member to illness, and I felt like I'd lost a piece of myself. Thankfully, I've maintained relationships with so many wonderful publishing professionals and have continued to develop skills that I've used in every role, with every team, and on every project since.
Since 2019, I have ghostwritten under NDA for a Wall Street Journal/USA Today bestselling author. Two titles I developed and wrote hit the USA Today list in 2022. Due to the high level of brand recognition the author has, I am unable to disclose who I write for or provide writing samples, but I can share writing samples of similar work and am happy to provide on-demand writing samples for ghostwriting clients in the following genres: contemporary romance, romantic suspense, nonfiction (memoir, wellness, consumer science and consumer legal, business, how-to books, and historical narrative).
My corporate background in toxic tort litigation and medical liability makes me a strong candidate for various projects which may not be outlined in depth here. I am happy to delve into specifics and answer any questions potential clients have on a complementary Zoom project assessment.
I'm a prolific writer able to produce 100,000 words of original work per month. My ghostwriting rates vary on the complexity/genre of the project, the overall compensation structure, and timeline the work is due within. Since I copyedit professionally, my final work product is delivered with a high level of technical quality. While I recommend a round of proofreading, clients often skip professional copyediting since I copyedit my work before delivery. Rates start at .11 per word for romance and increase from there based on project specifics. All Zooms and time required to learn the project specs and to communicate with the client are included in a written fee proposal prior to executing a formal agreement between the parties. Unless otherwise preferred by the client, all ghostwriting is completed as work-for-hire. I do not use any form of AI (artificial intelligence) software in my writing and I do not subcontract my ghostwriting. All work delivered is my original work product and intellectual property.
From 2018-2020 I was a staff writer for the top-performing Radish Original series, writing between 15,000 and 60,000 words per month under deadline.
I have participated in The Voices and Faces Project Writing Workshop both as a participant writer and as a volunteer "safe person." Pre-pandemic, I was on the Voices and Faces Speaker's Bureau and provided talks and information to live groups interested in education and tools to support survivors of gender-based violence.
I routinely teach copyediting, developmental editing, freelance editing, romance writing, and story structure at UCLA Extension. The Writers Program provides an amazing environment (almost all my courses are virtual/on demand) that allows students to learn from working professionals in an actionable, personalized way. Please check the Extension website for the most recent course offerings.
I've loved joining the Writers.com family as an instructor and panelist. The discussion with Taylor Capizola and Austen Rachlis about the journey from Reader to Write was absolutely spirited! Check out the reply and visit Writers.com to explore their catalog of classes.
Romance readers the world over know this name! Since shortly after The Ripped Bodice opened, I've hosted in-person book club events, taught workshops and classes, and of course spent every penny I have buying romance novels. If you're not in the Los Angeles area, please support your local/indie bookstores. I'm always happy to teach online if there is an interest. Just fill out the Contact form and I'll get back to you with ideas and availability.
My dreams of becoming YouTube famous became reality when I was invited by self-publishing guru Dale L. Roberts to work on an episode of Book Rescue. Check out the amazing work Dale is doing to help self-published authors create sustainable careers.
I'm the author of Amazon top-performing paranormal dystopian serial Bug under my pen name Callie Chase. I also self-publish fantasy romance and write bestselling novels for large author brands as a ghostwriter. Why do I write under a pen name? Jeanne De Vita is just a beast to spell correctly. Most people fumble saying it! Callie draws on my Cali vibe and really represents me: always chasing a dream. And I adore ghostwriting as it allows me to write in genres I love while I can focus on fantasy with my personal brand.
The picture is the same, but the name is not! Check me out wearing my Callie Chase hat while I talk about writing serial fiction with self-publishing guru Dale L. Roberts and appear on some wonderful podcasts hosted by talented writer friends.
This blew me away. Amazon included Bug in a launch day review for their serialized Kindle Vella platform. I still pinch myself when I read this.
A huge volume of my editorial work is in the romance space, but zombie fandom is a special place. Sarabeth Pollack, a talented author who wears even more hats than I do, wrote a review when Bug came out that I'm obsessed with! (Thank you, Sarabeth!)
Kindle Vella and serial fiction is a wild and wonderful new space for authors. Amazon asked me and some of the authors on Vella for tips and words of wisdom. What we shared was included on the Amazon blog.
